How many axolotls can I put in my tank?

An adult axolotl needs a tank of at bare minimum, 60cms, but 70cms is kinder. A width and height of 30cms or more is good too. A 20gal minimum for you Americans.

The rule “1ft per axolotl” and “10gal per axolotl” only applies after the initial tank size for one axolotl. 1ft is only 30cm, and adult axolotls can reach 30cms, so be kind and give them plenty of space.

So 70cms for one axolotl. One foot is not suitable for one axolotl, has to be 2ft bare minimum.

20 gal tank for one axolotl, add 10gal for two axolotls, and an additional 10gal per axolotl.

E.g.

1 axolotl 20 gal, 60-70cm length (2ft +)

2 axolotls are good from 90cms or longer (3ft)

3 around 100-110cm

4 in a 4ft tank (120cm)

Water quantity is also important, because axolotls poop out a lot of ammonia, and need a certain amount of water, and a decent filter to filter out the ammonia bioload. A tank with too little water will become toxic quicker and can kill your axolotl. If you put too many axolotls in a tank that doesn’t have enough water, one weekly water change will not be enough to keep nitrate levels in a cycled tank down. If your tank is not cycled, it becomes deadly toxic very quickly.
